What is the American Dream?

The American Dream, the ideology that with hard work you can make anything happen. While reading the Great Gatsby the American Dream is a recurring topic. One of the characters, Tom Buchanan, is often thought of living the American Dream. But that brings to question is that the actual American Dream? Take modern day for example, the American Dream means the freedom to make your own choices and be able to live peacefully and equally. That’s why many immigrate to America for freedom and liberty. Some would argue that this is the true American Dream. I personally think the American Dream is just living life the way you want it. Tom felt he achieved it with a good wife, good house, and wealth. He now thinks he has the perfect life and thus thinks he has achieved the American Dream. Meanwhile, immigrants get minimum wage job, a house, and a citizenship. To them it’s them making it, escaping their past and roots. In conclusion, there is no definite “American Dream”, it’s what you as an individual make it.
