Hamlet is a very interesting book as far as drama and back stabbing go. It is by far one of the most dramatic books Ive ever read, and as the book goes along, I’ve come to like and dislike certain characters.
First off, I don’t like Hanlet. He seems as if he’s putting on an act and lying to everybody. The way he acts is extremely irrational, and he’s disrespectful. He disrespects his family, friends, and his “significant other”, Ophelia. For example, he had called Rosencrantz a “sponge” because he soaks up to the king and you could metaphorically squeeze any information out of him. He also refers to his mother as being a slut for being with Claudius after King Hamlet was killed. Additionally, Hamley was extremely cruel towards Ophelia. He had told her how he never loved her and that she should have never believed him, and treated her as if she was worthless because she gave her virginity up to Hamlet. However, when Ophelia had died, he claimed to have loved her more than anyone, including Laertes. Hamlet states in act 5 scene one “I loved Ophelia. Forty thousand brothers could not with all their quantity of love make up my sum. What wilt thou do for her?” I find this very disrespectful considering he was always mean to Ophelia and now claims to love her more than anyone in the world. I think Hamlet is fake and an attention seeker.
My favorite character is Horatio. Horatio seems to be a loyal friend and hasn’t back stabbed anyone. He was truthful and kind. Also, I love Ophelia. She was always sweet and only wanted Hamlet to love her as much as she loved him, while he treated her so poorly. In my eyes, Ophelia deserved a lot better and nobody should have treated her as bad as they did. Hamlet tells Ophelia to “get thee to a nunnery.” He is telling her, out of anger, that she needs to become a nun and saying she should’ve reserved her virginity, and is extremely hurtful towards Ophelia with this comment.
