The Great Gatsby is display of a man who is obsessed with the idea of love, this is shown throughout the book by proposing his obsession with the woman named Daisy Fay. Throughout the book we see that Gatsby goes above and beyond to the point of insanity just to try and get Daisy. The part about this that causes drama and eventually leads to his murder, is that Daisy is married to the accomplished Tom Buchanan. Tom comes from a wealthy family name and has earned Daisy's love through money. It all starts when Gatsby enlisted in the Army, it was before he was rich, Both he and Daisy loved each other and swore that she would wait while he was gone. Coincidentally Daisy got tired of waiting and found out about Tom, the two became engaged and on the wedding day Daisy received a letter from Gatsby telling her that he was coming home. Because she had basically forgotten him, she had a very unhappy marriage with Tom. Tom cheated on Daisy with Myrtle, and tell sad part is that Daisy knew, so she cheated with Gatsby, so it became a very bad situation between the four of them. This is about when you notice Gatsby's behavior when it comes to love. Gatsby tries to spoil Daisy with all that money can buy, and he throws the most extravagant parties just hoping that one day she will show up, yet he never realizes that you cannot buy someone's love, you must earn it. Over time we see that Gatsby has become an emotionless mockery of a man. Part of the reasoning behind his obsession is that he was never loved as a child, he never had much of a bond with them, he tries to cover up his childhood when he changes his name to James Gatz to Jay Gatsby. This could be interpreted as a symbolic message about when people leave their past behind them.
During, the early life of Gatsby, we can assume that he does not like his parents due to the fact that he does not like mention them. We, the reader, can assume this because of the fact that he lied about his parents being rich to Nick. In the final chapter, it is stated that Gatsby bought a house for his parents, making the reader think that he actually cared for their well being. However, he may have done this, just to repay them for taking care of him when he was just a boy. We can infer this because in chapter 5, Gatsby said,” Well, this would interest you. It wouldn’t take up much of your time and you might pick up a nice bit of money,” to Nick. Gatsby asked Nick this, because he wanted to repay Nick for helping him out with inviting Daisy for tea. This shows that Gatsby does not like to in debt with people that he knows.
Overall, The Great Gatsby is great display of someone, who is obsessed with the idea. Gatsby went as far to change his name and go in illegal activities, just to impress Daisy. In WWI, Daisy was the only valuable thing on Gatsby's mind, which affected him mentally. In conclusion, The Great Gatsby is wonderful masterpiece that shows a side of love that still goes on today.
