What to the slave is the Fourth of July?
Fredrick Douglass was a former slave that escaped from his isolated life as a slave by persevering through life and picking up on skills that would lead him to great success in fighting for equality for enslaved blacks. Since he was young he wanted to learn to read, it was his dream. He eventually did pick up on a couple of things that helped him think outside of the slave mind set and think more as if he was a normal person, however he still knew he was still a "slave"inside.
Many ideas were being spread through the life of an African American during slavery in America. People, white and (educated) black read his autobiographies and felt bad or felt with him. Felt bad for what they were allowing to happen and if seeing it turning another way. Felt with him because of now freed slaves remember their own suffering while in the slave system. People demanded equality for blacks and as you guessed the South opposed this idea.
One of Fredrick Douglass's most famous speeches was "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?" This speech is could be seen from a distance. By this I mean that by just the title I could tell what it was going to be about. Fredrick talks about how it is important to celebrate this date however, expands on how it is also an offense to his community. This is because of how poorly they were being treated.
Ironic enough the slaves receive about the same amount of respect as the British did with the Americans. Sometimes people things they don't like to others and don't realize it. Today all races fight it out in the ring, but at the end of the day people are jerks and people lie about others being jerks. I believe Racism exists and is a huge part of society today as back then, however, that does not give the right to disrespect a country you live in and provides protection for you. African Americans back then did have the right because they had little if not no rights and the law was unjust. Still the fact remains the fourth of July is meant for people to show pride for the U.S.A and not remorse that can wait. On the other hand I do agree racism still exists and will exist because you cant change anyones mind just be kind to it.
