The “Hamlet” Predictions

We started reading “Hamlet” by Shakespeare in the second semester. So far, Hamlet is a very interesting book that makes you keep flipping the pages without getting bored. A king from Denmark is murdered and his son, Hamlet is destined to figure out who killed him. There are many twists in the story that leaves the reader thinking in many interpretations. Shakespeare uses double entendre especially on Hamlet’s dialogues to confuse the reader. In the story, Hamlet is a lucky-go boy who has the perfect girl, Ophelia. Suddenly, his father gets murdered and no one knows how it happened. Hamlet becomes depressed and it becomes difficult for him to overcome his father’s death. Our class is at Act IV scene I so far. These are some predictions that can be made from the story at this time.

  1. Hamlet kills Claudius- This prediction is quite obvious because Claudius is guilty for King Hamlet’s death. Claudius accepts his mistake in Act III Scene III that he killed his brother, King Hamlet. So Hamlet will kill Claudius to seek revenge on him.
  2. Hamlet commits suicide before killing Claudius- Throughout the play so far, Hamlet acts crazy, mental. No one really know whether Hamlet is truly mental or he is acting. It is all based on how the reader interprets it. By all means, if Hamlet’s plan did not work; he goes mental. He will probably commit suicide before killing Claudius to seek revenge.
  3. Claudius kills Gertrude- Gertrude is Hamlet's mother, Claudius’s wife, and the queen of Denmark. Claudius killed King Hamlet for the throne. He also wanted Gertrude to be his wife. Maybe after knowing that Hamlet knows that he killed King Hamlet, Claudius might have gotten an idea of killing Gertrude. If he kills Gertrude, Hamlet will be even more depressed and he will be an easy target for Claudius to kill him.
  4. The Ghost is all a fake- Today, many scholars, readers think that the ghost is not even real but a figment of Hamlet’s imagination. But others argue that the ghost is real because Hamlet’s friend, Horatio also sees the ghost. Maybe Hamlet and Horatio are insane and they see the ghost. The fact that Claudius killing King Hamlet can just be Hamlet’s pure luck or intuition. Claudius might have gotten the idea to kill Hamlet, only because Hamlet tries to embarrass Claudius in front of everyone in the play. This prediction can be on any side, depending on the reader's interpretation.
  5. Fortinbras destroys Denmark- Fortinbras is the King of Norway. Norway and Denmark have a violent history, filled with wars and bloodshed. King Hamlet killed Sr. Fortinbras, Fortinbras’s father. In seeking revenge, Fortinbras sends his advisors to Denmark to let know Claudius that he is not attacking Denmark, double- crossing them. We as readers know that Fortinbras won't let go off Denmark that easily after King Hamlet kills his father. Fortinbras probably receives news that Hamlet is leaving to England. He probably spares Hamlet because he’s done no harm to him. Soon after Hamlet leaves to England, Fortinbras will probably kill the royal family of Denmark and take over the kingdom.

Now that we have gone over all the most plausible predictions over what will happen in Hamlet, let us explore the more crazier side of the story…

  1. Hamlet kills Laertes - Ophelia’s brother Laertes was recently sent to Paris to learn fencing, a form of sword fighting. We also know that Ophelia is being harassed and bullied by Hamlet. By combining these two facts, we can reach a conclusion that Laertes will someday come back to Denmark in time to see Hamlet sexually abuse Ophelia, which drives him over the edge and challenges the prince of Denmark for a duel. During this duel, we can assume what comes next. Hamlet stabs Laertes and Laertes dies.
  2. Ophelia kills Hamlet - As Ophelia’s injustice from Hamlet increases, she will get more and more mad at him. Then Hamlet’s killing of Laertes and his killing of her father Polonius will drive her over the edge, forcing her to unleash all of her anger toward her former lover, eventually killing him.
  3. Hamlet kills everyone - As we know, Hamlet is right now exhausted from emotional and physical depression, and intense hatred toward his mother and uncle. As his mental state begins to wane, he might feel as if the people he knows are not good enough for him. Therefore, he goes on a killing spree, wiping out his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern first, then moving on to his archenemy Claudius and Gertrude, then finally killing Ophelia, Horatio, and himself.
  4. Claudius kills Hamlet - As you know, Hamlet means to murder Claudius because the Ghost tells him that Claudius murdered his father. What would happen if Hamlet’s assassination attempt on Claudius’ life went wrong and Claudius kills Hamlet? Very possible it might, due to his mental state during the play.
  5. Claudius is secretly working with Fortinbras - Earlier in the play, Claudius send two messengers to the prince of Norway to ask for peace between the two countries, which is something that the original King Hamlet never did. We were all making assumptions that Claudius’ main reason for taking the throne of Denmark was to control it and to male children with Gertrude. What if it that is entirely wrong? What if Fortinbras and Claudius conspired to kill King Hamlet for not only revenge against the murder of his father, but also for the power and money that would come out of it? Plus that would certainly add a twist to the story, wouldn’t it?

These are just some of the many possibilities that may happen in Hamlet. There are many many more that could happen in the play because of all the complex personalities of each character. We feel these ten predictions are the most likely, if not possible futures that Hamlet would have to live with, or die with, in some cases.

  1. Excellent predictions! I especially like the fact that you included "crazy" predictions, because you never know what may happen in this play! It only gets crazier as the scenes progress!
