One thing good and bad about Bronx Masquerade (plus studying tips)

Okay... so I'm not one to hate poetry or even the main protagonists but there's always one character in a book that the reader never likes, and for me that's Tyrone.

Many of you may be asking this question but here's why...

1.) He doesn't even believe that he'll live to adulthood.. but he lives really pessimistic-ly. Who wants to hang around with someone who is all mopey and sad? I sure wouldn't. I mean if I didn't think that I'd be able to live past the age of 18, it'd just make me even more motivated, and I'd see how far I'm going to last in the real world.

2.) He doesn't believe in his friends either, even when they try to reassure him. In the book, he patronizes Raynard even in the first chapter, like how rude is that?

3.) He doesn't even try... but then complains about it. Okay so this is my NUMBER 1 pet peeve, I absolutely hate when people do this. This pertains to both his school life and his social life. When he says "School ain't nothin but a joke" but then he realizes later that he only likes it just between one teacher, it kinda changes everything. Also, going with the whole never living past 18, he doesn't even try to change his opinion or anything, he's just sad about it, but doesn't do anything about it, like why???

4.) He judges everyone before he actually knows them. I also hate when people do this because that person does is always quick to anger, then goes on to tell the person they're judging things like "You don't how good you have it" but they have no idea what the other person is having to deal with. Ugh!

5.) Finally, he assumes he has to deal with the worst case possible. I always have the mindset that no matter what you have to deal with, there's always someone who has to deal with the worst, but obviously, Tyrone doesn't. I mean just look at poor Gloria, who has to deal with a child and raise him, but he never gives her any sympathy. He's too busy singing "My life sucks" at the bottom of a pit. I mean yes, I get it he's got a hard life. But there's always someone with a worse case, so he's got no excuse.

Now... here's good things about  Bronx Masquerade.

Bronx Masquerade is a book that gave me multiple emotions. Personally, I got to know and understand more about other people’s lives, and got to feel the feelings that I do not think I would ever get a chance to feel. For the fact that Bronx Masquerade is a book that includes many different perspectives from different people, it provides the readers the feeling of unity in a community, and also reflects a lot on social issues. Every single student has their own background, but they all come together in the Open Mike. The Open Mike is an excellent activity since it gives everyone a chance to clear misunderstandings, to speak up for themselves, and even just to express their feelings. The most important thing that the Open Mike brings to the high school is it brings the people together as well as helping the students to open up to their peers. It is good that the teacher did not make the Open Mike as an assignment or a requirement, but as a free space for the stars to shine. I don’t have a favorite character, but overall I like the meanings behind the book which is a reflection on many social issues.
All of the stories of all characters put a reflection on social issues that everyone can relate to. By using social issues as the main topic to talk about, the book becomes more appealing and attracts to teenagers. All of the speakers are teenagers and are in high school, so their perspectives on a social issue are more relatable to us and we can easily get along with the characters, which gave the book itself a bonus point. Social issues are difficult topics to discuss sometimes because people who have strong opinions and argumentative. However, the way that the Open Mike works makes the discussion runs smoothly.
I said this before in one of our activities in class, but I really hope we can have an Open Mike in our high school. It does not have to be like every Friday or every week. We can have once after two weeks so that people who want to participate can get prepared. Just like the green and yellow cards activity that we had, I feel like the Open Mike would be very helpful for people to open up because it is mostly indirect and through poetry, the message the one wants to deliver can be stronger and more powerful. It is understandable that we have a small high school. However, I still believe that an Open Mike is needed.

Now I know it's late into the year and English I/II and maybe even II/III are taking their state tests, and though it may be grueling, it's always better to study. So here are three tips to help you study and get the best score for your test.

1.) Find a go to space, snack, and drink during your studies. You have no idea how much this may help, my go-to is green tea and some sort of fruit... but you can do whatever floats your fish! But keep in mind wherever you decide to study, keep it at least some sort of quite if not you'll get distracted and then it all goes downhill.

2.) Look on Pinterest. Though ELA is always the hardest subject to study, your main points on the test come from writing. When I'm studying I always like to find fun tips for my essays and rewrite them in a notebook, this was super helpful. I even used colorful sharpies to jazz the whole thing up and make it catch my attention.

3.) Finally, if you're always having a hard time focusing or can't ever sit still for a while. Try listening to movie or video game scores. These songs are made to keep the person focused and you won't have to be studying in complete silence... which is sorta uncomfortable. Also, it's proven to be better if a student takes small breaks, like for 5 minutes break for every 30 minutes studying. Or you can reward yourself after you reach a certain point with something small, like a fruit snack or a 5 minute Youtube video. Which will definitely make you wanna study for a little longer. Your brain will be like
