ROMEO AND JULIET VS A MODERN LOVE SONG  By Abby Fletcher 

         In this  world.. let's face it, there's so many love songs known to man, that sometimes I don't even know what to listen to at the right moment.William Shakespeare's  Romeo and Juliet is one of the most popular love stories ever but there's also many modern love songs based on this play, that some come close to hitting the same brilliance that Shakespeare uses in Romeo and Juliet.Which shows that though there's about 500 years of a difference between when the play was written and now, people still have strong emotions when it comes to love and what we experience when we feel love. Here are two modern-day love songs, which connect to Romeo and Juliet and, in my opinion show the feelings Shakespeare portray in the play.

One popular, modern love song is Katy Perry’s Unconditionally, in this song gives the insight that no matter what happens, that person will always be loved. This song is exactly like Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in the sense that not matter what happens, they still love each other. This is shown multiple times, in one case when Juliet learns that Romeo is a Montague. With this she responds with, “My only love, sprung from my only hate!/Too early seen unknown, and known too late! /Prodigious birth of love it is to me/ That I must love a lothed enemy. (1.5.147-150)”, showing that she is still in love with him, not matter what.

       In one part of the song, it says “Acceptance is the key to be
To be truly free
Will you do the same for me?”

    This song I think  this is one of the most powerful and best part of the song, this is one of the parts of the bridge, where the writers are saying that the only way to be truly honest with each other is to promise that the couple won’t judge for anything they need to say or get off their chest.

    Another part of the song that I’m absolutely in love with is the very first part, when it says

   “Oh no, did I get too close oh?
Oh, did I almost see what's really on the inside?
All your insecurities
All the dirty laundry
Never made me blink one time”

    The reason why I like this song is that whoever you love, they would accept your insecurities, which I think we all sometimes struggle with, and to be truly accepting, no matter what you’ve been dealing with.

     This song is truly a representation of what Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet’s moral is, which helps someone understand what their whole relationship was about. After all these years, Will there be a love that can resemble Romeo and Juliet? A love which comes in sudden but strong, Will there be one? I’m not too young nor too old Not at the age that can experience various feelings of love But from stories I’ve heard The love which resemble Romeo and Juliet has been extinct. Shakespeare, one of the greatest authors of all time Who cherished the ideal of a beautiful love, A love that bring peace to war through intense rainy storm, And a love that’s so strong to the point storm becomes sunshine. His ideal of love is a dream of all human being But dreams will continue to be dreams, Expectations will go on as expectations, And reality will just stay as reality. Romeo and Juliet for a group of people are considered the greatest love story, and I acknowledge that. The story itself is a very romantic story between the two lovers who were willingly to do anything for their love without any hesitation. However, when people in our generation read the book, mostly will say that this is not realistic and too fictional, which can only happens in movies or books. The ideals of love that people in the past or older generation cherished are now becoming a dream of the younger generation. When a person listens to another person’s happy love story, the person who were listening will be shocked and surprised, because nowaday, sad news about love and relationship occur much frequently than the love that full with happiness and romance. Romeo and Juliet had to face many challenges and even result with death. However, the idea of how they both willingly to die for each other despite the war that their house have becomes something that the modern world wish to have. Reading this book where Shakespeare shared with world a beautiful love can be probably would help people think about true love again.
