Depression and how it relates to Hamlet and Catcher and the Rye

Depression is a theme played throughout many books. Many people, including authors, could have put in depression as a theme to portrait how they truely feel. Characters such as Hamlet and Holden have dealt with depression many times. But many don’t know why authors put this theme in as a story line. For example, Holden seems as if he has depression because of his tendacues and houghts. Hamlet could also deal with depression due to his father and all the events that happen.

Depression is a common theme in Catch in the Rye. Holden has clear signs of depression. He has shown the signs that he has it, by one, expressing how his brother has died. He could’ve also shown it because he talks about others which could show that he also has  insecurities about himself. As in the project that we conducted, I diagnosed him with treatment resistant depression because he seems as if he doesn’t want help. Holden also could be suffering because his brothers passing and him saying that he would run away because he wants to get away basically.

Depression also could play a part in Hamlet because of how Hamlet acts and everything else. People could see how his fathers death effected him. Hamlet doesn’t have that much depression, but it can still show in some scenes. But in other scenes it didn’t show such as when his girl died he didn’t seem to be depressed. Like for instance when he stabbed Polonious he felt a lot of remorse and later on in the story he ended up feeling very bad which could also play a part. In  both stories, depression plays some part.
